ANTI ULCER POTENTIAL OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF JASMINUM GRANDIFLORUM LINN. LEAVES ON DIFFERENT ULCER MODELS
Basavaraj S. Hunasagi* and Dr. Shashikant N. Dhole
. Abstract The present study describes the anti-ulcerogenic potential of ethanoloic extract of Jasminum grandiflorum Linn. Leaves on aspirin plus pyloric ligation (Aspirin+PL)-induced gastric ulcer model to substantiate its folklore claim. The ethanolic extracts at two doses 100 and 200 mg/kg, p.o. prevented ulcer formation by decreasing acid secretory activity and increasing the mucin activity in rats. The anti-ulcerogenic potential was further confirmed by the histopathological studies of stomach mucosa. The anti-ulcer potential of ethanolic extract of Jasminum grandiflorum Linn. Leaves were also evaluated by ethanol induced gastric lesions. Pretreatment with ethanolic extract of Jasminum grandiflorum Linn. leaves significantly (P < 0.05) increased the gastric glutathione, superoxide dismutase and catalase content and the inhibition of lipid peroxidative index. The results showed that ethanolic extract of Jasminum grandiflorum Linn. leaves had significant ulcer protective and healing effects and this might be due to its effects both on offensive and defensive mucosal factors.
