A COMPREHENSIVE APPRAISAL OF HISTORICAL REVIEW ON SHWAS ROGA OR ASTHMA

. Abstract The origin of Ayurveda is attributed to Atharva Veda where indication is made numerous diseases with their treatments. Later, from the 6th Century BC to 7th Century AD there was systematic development of the science and it is called Samhita period, when a number of conventional works were fashioned by several authors and during this period there is indication of systematized medical care. Since Vedic kala, there are so many references available regarding to Shwasa roga. Charaka has clearly described the Shwasa Kriya trouble as the symptoms of Pranvaha Srotodusti and also mentioned the Moola of Pranvaha Srotasa is Hridaya and Mahashrotas. Shwas roga is vatakaphatmaka, pittosthan smudhabhav vyadhi. The corresponding in western medicine to this disorder i.e. Asthma calls the attention of Medical world due to substantial burden in terms of health care costs as well as lost productivity and reduced participation in family life. Asthma is a condition which has been known and described for more than 2,000 years. word „ASTHMA‟ is Greek, meaning “breathless” or “to breathe with open mouth” Originally applied to shortness of breath of any cause, as in the description of the mode of death of metal miners by Agricola in 1556, it has come to be applied particularly to episodic breathlessness due to bronchial disease.
