A BRIEF LITERATURE REVIEW ON PIPER LONGUM WITH SPECIAL REFERENCES TO DIFFERENT AYURVEDIC SAMHITAS

Abstract

Pippali has been mentioned as an appropriate drug of the maintenance of human life in Vedic literature. Successful treatments of Vata Vyadhi and complicated disease as unmade have been documented in the Vedas. References regarding pippali can also be found in treatise like Rigveda. Pipalyadi samhita, Atharva parisista etc. In the Pauranic literature there is mentioning of Pippali as one of the best drug in the treatment of Amlapitta. Apart from this it has been also mentioned that Pippali can be used in the form of a compound drug for the treatment of diseases such as Swasa, Kasa, Hicca, Amavata, Kusta, Gulma, Pradara etc. Similarly in Garuda purana, Pippali has been mentioned as drug to be used in Grahani, Gulma, Raktapitta, Kasa, Agnimandya etc. Apart from this there is also mention of Pippali in different Samhita granthas in the treatment of different rogas. Nighantukaras have also elaborately described the guna dharma of this drug. Thus, from review of history we came to know that Pippali is a noncontroversial drug which has been in use for number of years in different diseases and also rasayana.
