Abstract
Antioxidants are the compounds that inhibit oxidation, a chemical
reaction that produces free radicals and chain reactions which may
cause cell damage and death. The oral tissues are delicate. Hence, they
are more susceptible to cell damage caused by free radicals and
oxidative stress. Antioxidants helps in preventing the production of
these free radicals. Antioxidants are being widely used in clinical
practice. There are some debates about the research methods and
dosages of antioxidants. This article will briefly review the mechanism
of antioxidants, types, significance and role of antioxidants in the
management of various oral diseases.
Keywords: Antioxidants, Free radicals, Oxidative stress.
