Abstract
The word psoriasis is derived from the Greek word, psora means to
itch or scale and Ias means, condition. Psoriasis appears to be largely a
disorder of keratinisation. Psoriasis is a chronic, recurring dermatitis
which may have onset in childhood or adolescence (type 1 psoriasis)
and in adults (type 2 psoriasis). Type 1 psoriasis is usually
charactorized by a positive family history, severe disease, and
prominent koebner phenomenon. Psoriasis is a disease condition in
which rapid replacement of the epidermis on the psoriatic lesion
occurs. Genetic and environmental factors greatly influence the clinical
development of psoriasis which results in wide differences in the
prevalence of this disease among different ethnic groups and in
different parts of the world. Estimates of the occurrence of psoriasis in
different parts of the world vary from 0.1- 3%. The few studies that have been performed in
India reveals the incidence of psoriasis attending clinic and hospital range from 0.8- 5.6%.
However this does not reflect the actual prevalence of psoriasis in general population.
