AN INTERVENTIONAL STUDY TO EVALUATE THE EFFECT OF PRANAYAMA ON SMRUTI IN SCHOOL GOING CHILDREN

Abstract
The present study to evaluate the effect of Pranayama on Smruti in
School Going Children was conducted on 100 volunteers from an
affiliated English medium school in the mentioned research area.
Udana vayu is considered as Pavanottama as cited in Sushruta
Samhita. Smruti is a function of Udana Vayu as stated by Acharya
Vagbhata. Smruti or memory in Ayurveda is a part of Buddhi (dhidhriti-
smruti). Here, only Smruti or memory aspect of Buddhi was
assessed. Pranayama is the fourth limb out of the eight limbs of Yoga
explained by Patanjali. Pranayama is the rhythmic controlled
breathing by means of controlling vayu or vata dosha. Inhalation and
exhalation are functions of the Prana vayu and Udana vayu
respectively, and Smruti is one of the functions of Udana vayu. Hereby, establishing an
indirect relation between Pranayama and Udana vayu. Now a days, weak memory or Smruti
is considered to be a disability in the entire fraternity of learning, of which school going
children are the greatest victims. Hence through regular Pranayama, an effort is been made to
understand the effect of Pranayama on Smruti. Also, knowing the extra proven benefits that
Pranayama possesses, if it is inculcated in schools as a regular curricular activity, the child
group will be favored from it in all dimensions immensely.
