Abstract
Background: Adverse drug reactions ADRs are the frequent drugrelated
concern all over the world. Psychotropic medications are
widely accessible, and their use is always being on the rise. Adverse
drug reactions (ADRs) to psychotropic agents are common and may
direct to noncompliance or even termination of therapy As a result,
monitoring, evaluating, preventing lowers the risk of developing ADRs
thereby reducing healthcare costs. Methodology: A prospective
observational study was conducted in the inpatient & outpatient unit of
the psychiatry department of RVM institute, Laxmakkapally for 6
months. Out of 123 patients, 191 ADRS were identified in 58 patients.
Results and Conclusion: The most commonly identified ADRS are
tremors (21.5%), weight gain (19.4%), xerostomia(11%), giddiness
(6.8%), sedation (5.8%), fatigue (4.7%), headache (4.2%), blurred vision (3.7%), EPS
(3.1%), hypersomnia (2.6%), constipation (2.6%). According to Naranjo's scale, majority of
ADRS fall under the criteria probable(50%), possible (43.9%), definite (4.1%), unlikely
(2%). Probability assessment by WHO-UMC probability scale shows 53.4% of ADRs are
probable and predictability is showing as 66.49% .Preventability assessment by Modified
Schumock and Thornton’s Scale shows that 43.98% of ADRs are not preventable. According
to T-test and CHI Square test Values of ADR's and Drugs per prescription are statistically significant, p=
