Abstract

Ayurvedic Bhasmas and nanomedicines are popularly compared for similarity in particle size and ability to reach micro levels. Aim- Manufacture Yashad bhasma (YB) using 99.9% pure zinc metal and Green-synthesis of Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZNP) and compare them on physicochemical and modern analytical grounds. Methodology- Preparation of Yashad Bhasma under three stages- Shodhana (purification), Jarana (Roasting) and Marana (Incineration) and green synthesis of Zinc-oxide nanoparticles using Aloe vera L. Physicochemical characterization like organoleptic characters, classical parameters of Bhasma- Apunarbhava, Niruttha, Rekhapurnata, Varitaratva, Unama, etc., Loss on Drying, Ash Value, Acid Insoluble Ash and Water-soluble Extractive, Assay for Zinc content were conducted along with sophisticated analysis namely Fourier transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscope and Energy Dispersive X-Ray. Result- 395 gm YB and 20 gm ZNP was obtained on an average from 500 gm Zinc and 59.50 gm Zinc nitrate hexa hydrate respectively. YB is creamish and ZNP is bright yellow in colour with no odour, no taste and soft to touch. Total Ash, Acid Insoluble Ash, Water Soluble Ash and Loss on Drying of YB were 99.82%, 0.99%, 0.38% and 1.26% respectively. Percentage of zinc in YB is 77.09%. SEM-EDAX confirms that YB and ZNP contain Zinc-oxide as major phase with an average particle size of 20.237 μm and 1.846 μm respectively. Carbon and nitrogen detected in both samples in trace amount. FTIR shows presence of nitriles, alkenes and nitrates. Conclusion- Zinc-oxide particles manufactured by ayurvedic and green synthesis method are similar on analytical grounds.

Keywords: Ayurveda, Green synthesis, Nanoparticles, Yashad Bhasma, Zinc nanoparticles.
