Abstract

The present work aimed at preparing mouth dissolving films of Fexofenadine hydrochloride with the purpose of developing a dosage form for a very quick onset of action, which is very convenient for administration, without the problem of swallowing and need of water. Oral fast dissolving films offer a solution for pediatrics, geriatrics, psychiatric or mentally ill people and those have difficulty in swallowing tablets/capsules resulting in improved patient compliance. So, mouth dissolving drug delivery system have acquired and important positions in the market by overcoming previously encountered administration problems and contributing to extension of patients life. The fast dissolving oral films were designed using optimal design and numerical optimization technique which was applied to find out the best formulation. The aim of the study was formulation development and evaluation of fast dissolving films of Fexofenadine hydrochloride. Film were prepared by solvent casting method by using poly vinyl alcohol as film forming polymer, glycerol and micro crystalline cellulose as plasticizer, aspartame as sweetening agent, citric acid as saliva stimulating agent. The formulated mouth dissolving films were evaluated for physical characteristics such as uniformity of weight, thickness, folding endurance, drug content uniformity, surface pH, percentage elongation, and tensile strength, and gave satisfactory results. The FTIR and DSC studies revealed that there is no physicochemical interaction between excipients and the drug.

Keywords: Mouth dissolving film, fexofenadine hydrochloride, solvent casting method.
