Abstract
The purpose of writing this review on floating drug delivery system
was to compile the recent literature with special focus on the principal
mechanism of floatation to achieve gastric retention. This review
entitled the detailed scenario related to floating drug delivery system
with their advantages over conventional drug delivery system and
limitation which are helpful in development of dosageform. This
triggered an increased interest towards formulation of novel delivery
systems which retained in stomach for prolonged and predictable
period of time. The several approach are currently utilized in the
prolongation of the gastric retention time, including floating drug
delivery system also known as hydrodynamically balance system, swelling and expanding
system, polymeric bioadhesive systems, modified shape systems, high density systems and
other delayed gastric emptying devices. From the formulation and technological point of
view the floating drug delivery system is considerable easy and logical approach. This review
article is in pursuit of giving detailed information on the pharmaceutical basis of their
design, classification, advantages, in vitro and in-vivo evaluation parameters and the future
potential of floating drug delivery system. An attempt has been made in this review article to
introduce the readers to the current technological development in floating drug delivery
system.
Keywords: Gastro Retentive drug delivery system.
