A REVIEW ON HERBAL GARGLES

. Abstract Gargles not only treat and give relief from bacterial and viral infection that has already been occured but also prevent us from such infections to occur in future. Gargling is a medicinal treatment as well as a hygienic practice which inhibits the growth of any bacteria occurring in the mouth and throat and prevents the bad odour which also helps to boost our self confidence. Since ages we all have been using a number of herbs for their medicinal properties. Some of the medicinal herbs which have been used since ages for gargling are Ocimum tenuiflorum, Yashtimadhu, Terminalia bellirica, Allium sativum, Catharanthus roseus, Zingiber officinale, Trigonella foenum-graecum, Althaea officinalis, Salvia officinalis etc. The gargling agents reviewed in this article have proven efficacy in reducing either bacterial or viral (or both) respiratory infections. Herbals which are used for gargling purposes may also have some possible side effects. Gargling is effective to treat and prevent upper respiratory tract infection, which proceeds to lower respiratory tract infection if not treated.
