Abstract

RECENT RESEARCH ON MUCOADHESIVE DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEMS - A REVIEW

Abstract

Mucoadhesion and mucoadhesive drug delivery systems are topics of current interest in pharmaceutical product development.Mucoadhesion refers to the attachment of a drug carrier to the mucous membrane which prolongs the stay of the drug containing carrier or dosage form at the site of application over longer period of time ,thus improving the drugs� bioavailability and /or providing controlled drug release. Literature on mucoadhesion and mucoadhesive polymers and drug delivery systems along with recent research on mucoadhesive drug delivery systems is reviewed in this article.
