Abstract
Introduction: Ziziphus xylopyrus belongs to family Rhamnaceae. Common name – Kath Ber, Hindi: Bara-ber, Kathber, Gal-ber, Marathi: Ghatbor, Tamil: Kottai-elandai, Mulkottai, Telugu: Gotti Chettu, Gotik, Kannada: Gotte. Ziziphus xylopyrus has been reported to have antimicrobial activity, Analgesic and Anti-inflammatory activity, antioxidant activity, Ferric reducing activity, Wound Healing activity, Antidepressant activity, Antidiarrheal activity, Anticataract activity, Antisteroidogenic activity, Antioxidant activity, ABTS radical scavenging activity and Antiulcer activity. Aims and Objective: To evaluate in vitro antidiabetic activity of ethanolic fruit extracts of
Ziziphus xylopyrus by α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzyme inhibitory assay. Materials and Methods: About 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 µg/ml concentrations of acarbose, and ethanolic fruit extracts of Ziziphus xylopyrus were used for the study. The absorbance values were taken in spectrophotometer at 540 nm for α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzyme, respectively. Results: The extracts exhibited significant inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzyme in dose-dependent manner. Ethanolic extract exhibited more inhibitory activity. Conclusion: Results shows considerable α-amylase inhibitory activity as well as α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. The present findings indicate that ethanolic fruit extracts of Ziziphus xylopyrus have in vitro antidiabetic activity.
