Abstract

Jalaukavacharana used as a para surgical procedure of Raktamokshana. Raktamokshana is mainly described by Acharya Sushruta in Sushruta Samhita. Raktamokshana is a bloodletting technique that has great potential to treat inflammation, ischemic diseases and infectious Diseases. Jalaukavacharan is used in treatment of Arthritis, Vascular Diseases, Venous Congestion, Abscess, Ischemic Heart Diseases And Many Skin Diseases. In Raktamokshana, Jalauka, Shring and Alabu is used in pitta, vata and kapha doshaj vyadhi respectively. In modern Jalauka is named as leech. In Leech saliva, many biologically and pharmacologically active compounds which make an effort to effect in host’s body like anticoagulant, Antiplatelet, Anti inflammatory, anti edema. On this leech therapy lots of research work has been done. Various scientific studies which are conducted by ayurveda and Modern medicine in which they explain the indications, contraindications and complications of leech therapy are reviewed in this article.
