Abstract
The present study was to prepare a gastro retentive drug delivery
system which offer the advantage in prolonging the gastric emptying
time. Floating sustained release Losartan Potassium tablets were
formulated by direct compression method. Losartan Potassium used in
the treatment of Hypertension. The various type formulations were
prepared by using hydrophilic polymers like HPMC K100M, ethyl
cellulose, gas generating agents like Sodium bicarbonate and citric acid
and active drug Losartan Potassium. The Floating tablets were
evaluated for precompression and post compression parameters are
solubility, uniformity of weight, hardness, friability, drug content, in
vitro buoyancy studies, dissolution studies. The drug release profile
and buoyancy properties was investigated. The prepared tablets
exhibited satisfactory physico-chemical characteristics. All the formulated batches showed
better in-vitro buoyancy studies. It was observed that the tablet remained buoyant for 12-18
hours. The drug release mechanism from floating tablets was found to be Korsmeyer-Peppas
equation. Thus the Floating system of HPMC K100M and Ethyl cellulose was found to be
effective in regarding sustained release of Losartan Potassium Floating tablet. From the
present study it is summarized that the developed formulation has good appearance with good
handling condition, stable, therapeutically efficacious.
