Harshita Pant and Priyanka Bhandari
Abstract
Uterine fibroids are also known as leiomyomas. Leio means smooth,
Myo means muscle and Mas means tumour. When these are combined,
a smooth muscle tumour is formed. The fibroids are balls of flesh
formed in the muscles of your uterus. It is not cancer; it can be found
in 70-80% of women up to the age of 50. These fibroids can range in
size from a small mustard seed to a very large tumour. But in uterus
benign is also dangerous because it directly affects the pregnancy and
child birth. A fibroid can cause abnormal bleeding pelvic pressure,
bowel disfunction, low back pain, constipation, urinary frequency.
Uterine leiomyomata are the direct cause of a significant health – care
burden for woman, their families, and society as a whole. Because of the long experience
with the mode of treatment, surgical myomectomy remains the gold standard for treating
reproductive – age women; however, in the recent years, the wide evolution of less invasive
approaches led to a change in the options used by the clinician to treat symptomatic fibroids.
Minimally invasive procedures such as uterine artery emoblisation are increasingly used to
treat symptomatic fibroids.
