A COMPARATIVE STUDY TO EVALUATE THE EFFICACY OF VIMALA VARTI ANJANA AND PIPPALYADI ANJANA IN PRATHAMA PATALAGATA TIMIRA (SIMPLE MYOPIA)

Abstract
Background: The prevalence of myopia increasing globally with
significant increase in the risks for vision impairment from
pathological conditions associated with high myopia. In India there are
9 million blind people, which comes to one fifth of the total in the
world and 19.7 % is due to uncorrected refractive errors. Myopia is a
type of refractive error and Simple myopia is the commonest variety.
Myopia can be related to Prathama Patalagata Timira based on its
Lakshana. Timira is explained as one of the Drishtigata Roga and it is
a common condition comes across in general ophthalmic practice.
Objectives: To evaluate the therapeutic effect of Vimala varti Anjana
and Pippalyadi Anjana in the management of Prathama Patalagata
Timira (simple myopia) & to compare the therapeutic effect of both the
Anjanas. Materials and Methods: 20 patients within 10-21 years of age with the features of
Prathama Patalagata Timira in each group were selected from the OPD and IPD of the
Shalakya Tantra department of AAMC, Moodbidri. Patients of Group A and Group B were
given with Vimala Varti Anjana and Pippalyadi Anjana for 48 days respectively. Results:
Data was tabulated and analyzed using Wilcoxon signed rank test, which showed marked
improvement in patients with Prathama Patalagata Timira in both the groups. Comparison
on the effect of Vimala Varti Anjana and Pippalyadi Anjana was measured by Mann Whitney
Rank Sum test. Vimala Varti Anjana and Pippalyadi Anjana is proved effective in merely all
patients. On comparing percentage wise relief, Group A showed better effect on- Head ache and Eye strain, Whereas Group B showed better effect on – Blurring of vision, Watering of eyes, Visual acuity and Dioptric power. But statistically there is no significant difference in between the groups. Discussion: Vimala Varti Anjana and Pippalyadi Anjana are effective formulations giving good results in the management of Prathama Patalagata Timira due to its Tridoshahara and Chakshushya property. Conclusion: On the basis of the results of this study it can be clearly concluded that Anjana performed with Vimala Varti and Pippalyadi Varti provided significant relief in the signs and symptoms of Prathama Patalagata Timira.
