AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF GRIDHRASI W.S.R. SCIATICA-A CASE STUDY

Abstract
Gridhrasi (sciatica) is a lifestyle disorder associated with pain
hampering daily routine of life. The incidence rate vary from about
three times in male as in female sex. Gridhrasi is a shoolpradhan
vyadhi that is presented as common symptoms such as pain, pricking
and stiffness primarily starting from the Sphik region (gluteal region)
and radiating through posterior aspect of Kati‐Prishtha (low back),
Janu (knee), Jangha (thigh) till Pada (feet). In Ayurveda, Gridhrasi
disease closely resembles with Sciatica of modern medicine in its signs
and symptoms. It is described as one of the Vata Nanatmaj vyadhi
manifested due to vitiation of Vaat Dosha alone or with the vitiation of
Kapha Doshas leading to Vataj or Vata-Kaphaj Gridhrasi. Case
Presentation: We report the case of a 61-year-old man experiencing pain in lower back region
radiating to right leg since 5 months. He was administered various Shamana yogas along with
Matra Basti with Mahanarayan taila and Nadi Sweda. The symptoms of Gridhrasi (Sciatica)
like Ruka (Pain), Toda (Pricking Sensation), Stambha (Stiffness), Spandan (Twitching) and
Kaphaj Symptoms like Aruchi (Anorexia), Tandra (Drowsiness), Gaurava (Heaviness) and
tests like S.L.R. test and Walking tests were observed over the treatment. Analysis of result
showed improvement in Gridhrasi (Sciatica). Finally study concluded that given treatment is
found effective in management of Gridhrasi (Sciatica).
