A CLINICAL STUDY TO EVALUATE THE EFFECT OF KUSHMANDA RASAYANA IN CHITTODVEGA W.S.R TO GENERALISED ANXIETY DISORDER

Abstract
Background: Manas has two main doshas: rajas and tamas. When
there is an imbalance, it causes many manasika roga, one of which is
chittodvega. Generalized Anxiety Disorder is one of the commonest
psychiatric disorders in general population. Characterized by excessive
or unrealistic anxiety about two or more aspect of life (work, social
relationships, financial matters etc.), often accompanied by symptoms
such as palpitations, shortness of breath or other somatic symptoms.
Chittodvega symptoms are similar to those of Generalized Anxiety
Disorder. Objective: To evaluate the therapeutic effect of Kushmanda
Rasayana in Generalized Anxiety Disorder/ Chittodvega. To assess the
quality of life in patients diagnosed with GAD. Methodology: An
open label clinical study with pre-test and post-test design. 20 subjects
with diagnostic criteria of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) were
selected from OPD and IPD of Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara
Ayurvedic Hospital, Udupi, Karnataka, India. The subjects were administered with
Kushmanda Rasayana 12gm OD before breakfast with warm water for 30 days. The outcome
measures were assessed using Hamilton’s Anxiety Rating Scale, GAD 7 Scale, and WHO
Quality Of Life (WHOQOL) Scale. The assessment is done before treatment i.e. 0th day,
after treatment i.e. 30th day and follow up on 60th day. The subjective parameters were
analyzed statistically using Wilcoxon Signed Rank test and objective parameters like blood
pressure and pulse rate were analyzed using Paired t test. Results: The results obtained were statistically significant in the parameters like Hamilton’s Anxiety Rating Scale, GAD 7 Scale, and WHO Quality Of Life (WHOQOL) Scale with P value < 0.001. Conclusion: Kushmanda Rasayana was effective in reducing symptoms of Chittodvega/Generalized Anxiety Disorder. The efficacy of the medication has been proved with the statistical analysis of the parameters.
