HYPERTENSION - KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE, PRACTICE AND EVALUATION OF PRESCRIPTION PATTERNS OF ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS IN ASTER CMI HOSPITAL, BANGALORE

Abstract
The proposed prospective observational study on Hypertension -
knowledge, attitude, and practice and evaluation of prescription
patterns of antihypertensive drugs was performed with 150 patients at
Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore for a period of 6 months. Knowledge
Attitude Practice analysis was conducted among the 150 patients
through well prepared questionnaire. Of 150 prescriptions enrolled,
males (104) were predominant than females (46). Hypertension is more
prevalent in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus. The present study
results showed that there are 9 pure hypertensive patients, 97 patients
with hypertension and diabetes mellitus and 44 patients with
hypertension and other co morbidities. 126 prescriptions were prescribed with monotherapy
(84%) where Beta Blockers are the most commonly prescribed class followed by Calcium
Channel Blockers, Angiotensin Receptor Blocker’s and Diuretics whereas 24 prescriptions
prescribed with combination therapy (16%) in which loop diuretics + potassium sparing
diuretics and Angiotensin Receptor Blocker’s + thaizide diuretics were most commonly
prescribed. Patients relatively had moderate awareness, knowledge, attitude and practice
about their disease.
