Abstract
It is important to maintain good hand hygiene practice as it helps in preventing germs from entering into the body. The occurrence of COVID 19 has re-asserted the importance of maintaining a healthy hand hygiene. With the increase in spread of the disease, it was suggested to use hand sanitizers due to their ease of availability under any circumstances. However, frequent use of hand sanitizers results in loss of moisture from hands and may also lead to drying/cracking of skin of hands. Thus, there existed a need for a hand sanitizer formulation having moisturization properties/benefits. Also, it would be beneficial if there are no side-effects of the sanitizer and at the same time it has benefits of natural ingredients. Thus, the present study was undertaken to standardize a test formulation in the form of gel cream having antimicrobial/sanitizing as well as moisturizing properties and to evaluate its efficacy as an antimicrobial and moisturizing hand sanitizer formulation. The present study shows that the Test formulation containing Ethyl Alcohol (20%), Lactic acid and herbal ingredients namely Turmeric and Tulsi extract, provided 99.99% antimicrobial action, significant hydration and moisturization of the skin from first use when compared with generic gel based sanitizers.
