ROLE OF AYURVEDA NUTRITION IN PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT OF NON – COMMUNICABLE CHRONIC DISEASES: A REVIEW

Abstract
A non-communicable disease (NCD) is a disease that is not
transmissible directly from one person to another. NCDs include
Parkinson's disease, autoimmune diseases, strokes, most heart diseases,
cancers, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis,
Alzheimer's disease, cataracts which are significant problems both
globally and regionally. communicable disease no longer the only
threat because of changes in diet and lifestyle as well as rapid
population ageing in developing countries. Major NCDs such as
circulatory system disease, cancer, diabetes, major psychiatric disorder
and chronic respiratory disease are now quickly adding to the
worldwide burden of disease. NCDs are interconnected, not only
sharing many of the same risk factors but also acting as risk factor for
each other. According to Ayurveda lifestyle disease are caused by
wrong „Ahara‟ and „Vihara‟. Ayurvedic intervention is targeted towards complete physical,
psychological and spiritual wellbeing which make it a wonderful option in treating lifestyle
disorder. Ayurveda provides solution in the forms of proper dietary management, Dincharya,
Ritucharya, Panchakarma, Sadavritta, Rasayana. Nutrition is vital, not only in the growth and
development of humans and animals but also in the prevention and treatment of disease.
Nutrition is also fundamental to the maintenance of good health and functionality. Basic and
applied research on the interrelations between nutrition and non-communicable diseases, nutrient composition, and nutrition monitoring represents the underpinnings for healthy populations and robust economies. Proper nutrition offers one of the most effective and least costly ways to decrease the burden of many diseases and their associated risk factors.
