*Dr. Pooja Rani, Dr. Pramod Kumar Mishra and Dr. Brahmanand Sharma

Abstract

The health of an individual depends on his/her diet and lifestyle. Due to changing diet, lifestyle and environmental factors joint disorders are becoming the main health problem in the present era. As a result, consumption of baked food, half fried vegetables etc. causes impairment in the digestion and metabolism of protein structure making human beings vulnerable to many life-threatening disorders like stroke or functional impairment like in joint disorders. The disease Vatarakta is described as one of the diseases of Sammurchhna of Vata and Rakta. It is a Vatapradhana Tridoshaja Vyadhi where main Dushya is Rakta. Hence Vatarakta is a disease where both Vata and Rakta are afflicted by distinct etiological factors. Acharya Sushruta has described it under Vatavyadhi Chikitsa chapter whereas Acharya Charaka and Vagbhatta described it in separate chapter. Based on causes, signs and symptoms, Vatarakta may be correlated to gouty arthritis in modern science. Gouty arthritis is a metabolic disorder of purine protein metabolism characterized by hyperuricemia & deposition of monosodium urate crystals in Joints. It is chronic metabolic disorder of musculoskeletal system characterized by severe pain, tenderness, inflammation and burning sensation in affected joints. It has been called “The disease of Kings” due to its association with rich foods and alcohol consumption. Due to severe morbidity, chronicity and incurability with associated complications, Management of Vatarakta could be a challenge. Hence an attempt has been created to focus on certain life style modifications like low protein diet etc. and certain Shamana Aushadis and Shodhana procedures recommended in different authentic texts of Ayurveda for its cure and prevention. Evaluation of efficacy is the main aim and objective of this review.

Keywords: Vatarakta, Uttana Vatarakta, Gout, Hyperuricemia, Gouty arthritis.
