Abstract
Drug toxicity is a common health problem now a day’s in population.
6% of hospital admissions and 2.5% of emergency department visits
for injuries or poisonings caused due to adverse drug reactions or drug
toxicity. Peptic ulcers are the most common toxic effects caused due to
allopathic drugs. These toxic effects are produced as a result of
continuously using some drugs, which is a major cause of mortality &
morbidity among population. NSAIDs, Aspirin, Paracetamol, H2
Blockers etc. are some of the drugs which are widely used in
population for getting quick results. Chronic uses of NSAIDs are major
causative factors for peptic ulcers. NSAIDs are generally used for
musculoskeletal problems and aspirin as anti- inflammatory in lower
dose, in higher doses; it is frequently indicated for the secondary
prevention of thrombotic cerebrovascular or cardiovascular disease.
But they produce severe organ toxicity, especially peptic ulcers. But our Ayurveda is so vast
and well developed that it provides treatment not only to fight with the disease but also to
fight with toxicity produced by modern drugs. Drugs like nimba, yashtimadhu, haridra,
lodhra, formulations like laghu suta shekhar ras, kamdudha ras etc. have positive effects on
gastric problems specially peptic ulcers etc. The present paper deals with toxicity caused by
NSAIDs & aspirin especially peptic ulcers & role of Ayurveda to curb this problem.
