Abstract

PHARMACOECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF ANTIBACTERIAL AGENTS IN A SUPER- SPECIALITY HOSPITAL, TUMAKURU, KARNATAKA

Abstract

Background: The term pharmacoeconomic analysis is refers to compare the value /cost of one drug or drug therapy to another. Pharmacoeconomic study evaluates the cost and effects of a pharmaceutical product. Aim: To identify, measure and compare the cost of the pharmaceutical products to evaluate cost effective drug therapy and also to choose the best among the numerous drug alternatives. To reduce economic burden on the consumers for the effective management of health care system. Materials and method: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted for 6 months among patients who have been prescribed with antibacterial agents in SHRC Tumakuru, from January 2021 to June 2021. Data has been collected by using data collection forms, assessed and analysed for our objectives and results. Result: The study revealed the fact that the burden of high cost of drugs including expensive antibacterial agents point out to further needs of effective interventions that need to be undertaken is our healthcare system. The study found that the most commonly prescribed expensive antibacterials are piperacillin and tazobactam generic drug, followed by cephalosporins and the metronidazole. Conclusion: economic burden of anti-bacterial agents demands an effective intervention at the study site and selection of cost effective brands of antibacterial agents with same generic content without any compromise in their effectiveness. The rational use these antibacterial agents is one of the main contribution for cost effective treatment.
