Abstract
Agni located in Pitta dosha is considered responsible for all
metamorphoses taking place in the body like metabolic responses,
hormonal conduct etc. According to Vagbhata, pitta has this main
function videlicet pakti (digestion), ushma (maintain proper body
temperature), darshan (vision), kshudha (hunger), trushna (thirst),
prabha (lustre to skin), medha (intellect). Pathological increase in Pitta
causes unheroic coloured skin and eyes and drop in Pitta causes loss of
lustre and low glorification(prabhahani).Pitta dosha have five
divisions depending on the point and mode of action. Bhrajaka pitta is
considered as the division of Pitta giving the color and luster to the
skin and maintaining the body temperature. Bhrajak pitta is located in
skin and its functions are regulation of body heat and maintain normal skin colour and
immersion and digestion of drug applied externally on skin like oil painting, lepas etc.
According to modern view, the colour of skin depends upon melanin attention. Redundant
position of melanin results in skin tanning while absence of melanin causes albinism. Corelative
study of Bhrajak Pitta and melanin may helpful to ayurvedic scholars to understand
ayurvedic conception Bhrajak pitta in modern point of view.
