ANTI-ULCER POTENTIAL OF ZIZIPHUS MAURITIANA

. Abstract Ulcers, majorly peptic ulcer is a painful sore that reoccur causing severe disturbance in the digestive tract. The etiology of peptic ulcer is reported to be as inflammation which is caused by Helicobacter pylori and an excessive use of NSAIDs. There is standard treatment following the use of proton pump inhibitors, antacids, NSAIDs but an overuse of these leads to another side-effect. The area where allopathic medicines fail, ayurvedic medicine has always covered them back. Tons of studies are there which overpower using ayurvedic or traditional medicines over allopathic drugs. From the ancient times, the Indian civilization history has shown well proofs indicating the best use of traditional medicines with maximum therapeutic activity and minimum or zero side effects. This review article focuses on the use of Ziziphus mauritiana in the treatment of severe ulcers. Ziziphus mauritiana, commonly known as Ber is a shrub or tree species which belong to the family Rhamnaceae. The plant is a thorny, evergreen tree with spines and drooping branches. Being native to India plant is a minor fruit crop which is suitable for cultivation in arid conditions. The Ber majorly grows in north-west, north central, southeastern, central, west of India and in western Himalaya. The fruits of the plant are majorly rich in Vitamins like A, C and B complex. The presence of digestible crudes and protein in the leaves make it a great nutritive fodder for cattle and other animals.
