CLINICOPATHOLOGICAL STUDY OF FEMALE GENITAL TRACT CANCERS IN BASRA CITY (2017–2021) THE SCIENTIFIC COUNCIL OF THE ARAB BOARD OF ANATOMIC PATHOLOGY

Abstract
Introduction: This review summarizes the epidemiology of female
reproductive system cancer and the associated lifestyle factors. It also
assesses the evidence for occupational factors linked to these cancers.
Cervical, endometrial, and ovarian cancers are relatively common and
cause significant morbidity and mortality around the world, whereas
vulvar, vaginal, fallopian tube, and choriocarcinomas are extremely
rare. Aim: This study was carried out to determine the incidence of
genital cancers among adult women in Basra city between 2017-2021.
Methodology: Over a five-year period (2017 – 2021), 331 cases were collected from
histopathological governmental and private pathologic laboratories. Result: The higher
incidence rate in 2021 and 2018 (6.59/ 100,000 population) and (6.01/100,000 population)
respectively. While the endometrial cancers being most common female genital tract
malignancies followed by ovarian and cervical cancers, while the endometroid
adenocarcinoma was the commonest subtype of endometrial carcinoma. Conclusion: cancers
of the endometrium is the most common female genital tract malignancy in Basra followed
by ovarian and cervical cancers. For each group of cancers, 50 years and above was the
commonest age group.
