THE INCIDENCE OF PRIMARY COLORECTAL TUMORS IN BASRA CITY (2019-2021) SCIENTIFIC COUNCIL OF THE ARAB BOARD OF ANATOMIC PATHOLOGY

Abstract
Introduction: Colorectal tumors include benign and malignant lesions,
however colorectal cancer is the second most frequent cancer in
women after breast cancer and the third most frequent cancer in males
after lung and prostate cancer. The most substantial increase in
incidence and death for colorectal cancer occurs in countries with a
medium to high human development index. Even in the face of rising
incidence, advancements in therapy have resulted in declines in
colorectal cancer mortality. Aim: This study was carried out to
estimate the incidence of primary colorectal tumor in Basra city from January 2019 to
December 2021 and analyze the results with published data. Methodology: Total number of
380 cases were collected in the governorate from January 2019 to December 2021. All
histopathological data for primary colorectal tumors issued by the histopathology
departments of all major governmental hospitals and from pathological private laboratories
were analyzed. Age, sex, site and histopathological types were among the information
gathered. Recurrent and metastatic cases were not included in the analysis; only newly
diagnosed cases. Results: The incidence of colorectal tumor commonly increase with
increasing age group particularly age above of 60 years , during period of study (from 2019
to 2021) colorectal adenocarcinoma was the commonest type of tumor about (84.70%) and it
is mainly occur in left side of colon specifically at rectosigmoid region with no significant
difference relation to gender of patient. Conclusion: Colorectal adenocarcinoma is the most
common type of colorectal tumors which occur mainly in the rectosigmoid area and
incidence of it increases with increasing age of patients.
