A REVIEW OF ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF TRIKATU CHURNA

Abstract
Trikatu is combination of equal quantity of three ingredients i.e,
Shuntha (Zingiber officinale) which has katu ras, madhur vipaka
ushna virya laghu snighdha guna, while Maricha (Piper nigrum) has
katu ras, katu vipaka, ushna virya, laghu tiksna, sukshma guna and
Pippali (Piper longum) has katu ras, madhur vipaka, ushana virya,
laghu and tikshna guna. In Trikatu, the chemical compositions are
saponin, phenols, alkaloids, tannis, etc. Zingiber contains essential oils
which have antimicrobial activity against bacteria. Piper nigrum
contain piperine which is responsible for antimicrobial activity against
various bacteria. By invitro of agar well diffusion method and recorded
zone of inhibition, antibacterial activity of trikatu churna can be seen.
