Dr. Ramyashree Nagendra*

Abstract

Introduction: Prasarini sandhanam is mentioned in Amavata adhikara of chakradatta. This yoga is an arishta preparation and consists of Gandhaprasarini, lashuna and panchakola. Mandagni (Hypo-functioning) of digestive fire is considered as the root cause for manifestation of all diseases. Amavata is caused due to the formation of ama rasa and increased vata which resides in joints causing pain, swelling, stiffness and loss of structural integrity. In ayurveda, Amavata can be co-related to Rheumatoid arthritis based on its clinical signs and symptoms. Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease of unknown aetiology marked by a symmetric, peripheral polyarthritis. It is the most common form of chronic inflammatory arthritis and often results in joint damage and physical disability. Gandha prasarini (Paederia foetida) is proved drug having anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Lashuna is having anti-inflammatory, analgesic, immunomodulatory and anti-arthritic properties. Panchakola is having deepana, ama-pachana, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-oxidant and immunomodulatory actions. Hence Prasarini sandhanam helps in relieving the pain, stiffness, swelling, inflammation and prevent further destruction of joints.
