Abstract
Antimicrobials are the agents that destroy or inhibit the growth of a
microbe. Sarvangasundari Gutika is an Ayrveduic medicine which
constitutes Bhallataka (Semecarpus anacardium Linn.) as a major
ingredient. This formulation is specifically indicated for the treatment
of skin diseases in the classical text of Yogaratnakara. Its
antimicrobial evaluation was done by using Agar Disc Diffusion Assay
and Broth Dilution Assay against the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus
and fungus Candida albicans. The use of drug was done in the
concentration of 10 μL, 25 μL, 50 μL, 100 μL in Agar Disc Diffusion
Assay and 400 μg, 200μg, 100 μg, and 50 μg in Broth dilution Assay.
After experimental study, the drug was effective on the bacteria at a
concentration of 200 μg but failed to show its action against the fungus. It is concluded that
Sarvangasundari Gutika has antibacterial activity against gram positive
bacteria(Staphylococcus aureus).
