STUDY ON DOSE ADJUSTMENT OF ORAL HYPOGLYCEMIC AGENTS IN TYPE II DIABETES MELLITUS PATIENTS IN SUPER SPECIALITY HOSPITAL, TUMKUR

Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus is a major health issues in the world. It
is the most common metabolic diseases which can lead to enormous
medical as well as socio-economic consequence. The dose adjustment
of oral hypoglycemic agents plays a role in improving the patient’s
quality of life. Objective: To assess dose prescription pattern,
overdose, actual dose and sub- therapeutic dose of oral hypoglycemic
agents. Materials and Methods: a prospective interventional study
was conducted for 6 months among patients who have been prescribed
with oral hypoglycemic agents in SHRC TUMAKURU. A total of 100
patients were involved in this study. By providing inform consent form
and data has been collected, assessed and analyzed for our objectives and results. Result: A
total of 100 patients were participated in the study in that majority of patients that is 78%
received actual dose, 16% received sub-therapeutic dose and 6% received overdose. The
adult populations were 56% and geriatric were 44%. The study suggests that the prescription
of the oral hypoglycemic agents needs an effective intervention that need to be undertaken in
our healthcare system. Conclusion: The sub-therapeutic dose and overdose of the oral
hypoglycemic agents demands an effective intervention at the study site and the actual dose
of oral hypoglycemic agents should be given according to patient’s requirement and
tolerability for that dose adjustment is the effective method.
