Abstract
Introduction: Study was planned to know vitamin D status in mothers
and their newborns and effect of vitamin D deficiency on pregnancy
outcome. Study design: Two hundred consecutive pregnant women
with singleton pregnancy admitted to the labor ward of a tertiary care
center were recruited for the study. Results: Results High prevalence
of hypovitaminosis D was found among pregnant women. Eighty-six
percentage had vitamin D deficiency, 9.5% had insufficiency, and only
4.5% had sufficient vitamin D level. Out of 200 cases, deficiency of
vitamin D (36%), insufficiency of vitamin D (39%), sufficiency of
vitamin D (8%) and non diagnosed were (17%). This study showed
vitamin D deficiency influences on baby weight. The deficiency of
vitamin D leads to low baby weight at the time of birth. The relation
between vitamin D deficiency and low baby weight is highly
significant. This study showed vitamin D deficiency influences on back pain and joint pain.
The relation between vitamin D deficiency and back pain, joint pain is highly significant.
This study showed vitamin D deficiency influences on PIH and GD. The relation between
vitamin D deficiency and PIH is moderately significant and the relation between vitamin D
deficiency and GD is highly significant. Conclusion: In conclusion, the data indicates a high
prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among pregnant women. The significant association
between vitamin D deficiency and abortions, back pain, joint pain, PIH, GD, and baby weight
are observed in this study. This study shows no significant association between vitamin D deficiency and literacy rate. This work will serve as a foundation for future research on vitamin D status and it’s effect on pregnancy related outcomes.
