TRADITIONAL METHOD OF FISHING AND FISH CATCH AT DAKRA PANCHAYAT, MAKHDUMPUR, JEHANABAD, BIHAR, INDIA

Abstract
The traditional method of fishing is very old practice and this hierarchy
is coming since ancient time the upper Palaeolithic the stone age. The
present study deals with the traditional methods of fishing and fish
catch by using different modus operandi namely Drag net (Dondi), Gill
net (Current Jal), Stationary bag net, Cast net (Faku Jal), Mosquito net,
Hand net (Okka), Hooks and lines (angling), Bamboo cage Trap net,
Reed sticks screen (Chilong) and by Hand trapping in different water
bodies at Dakra Panchayat. Gill net, stationary bag net, bamboo cage
trap net and Reed and stick screen were mainly operated during
monsoon season. Drag net, Hand net and Hand trapping methodology
were used in both winter and summer seasons and where as Cast net, Mosquito net and
Hooks and line were evergreen and operated through out the year. The catch of different fish
species were recorded on the basis of the seasonal fish landing avenue. The percentage wise
contribution of fish catch were 26.16%, 23.81 %, 9.18 %, 8.50%, 7.50%, 7.31 %, 4.83%, 4.67
%, 4.66%, and 3.37 % by Drag net, Mosquito net, Stationary bag net, Reed sticks screen,
Hand trapping, Hooks and line, Gill net, Cast net, Hand net and Bamboo cage trap net
respectively. The maximum and minimum fish catch were recorded 35 % and 0.2% by
Puntius species and Heteropneustes fossilis respectively.
