Abstract
Ayurveda is an ancient Indian system natural and holistic medicine.
When translated from Sanskrit, Ayurveda means ‘the science of life’.
In Ayurveda, Ayu means life is defined as conjunction of body, soul,
mind and senses. Marma in ayurvedic classics is illustrated as the vital
points in human body, the injury of which leads to termination of life.
Marma is defined as a site where the muscles, veins, ligaments, bones,
and joints all these structures meet. There are one hundred and seven
(107) marmas points (vital spots) out of which eleven are present in
each limb, twenty-six in the trunk (three in the abdomen, nine in the
thorax, fourteen in the back), and thirty-seven in the head neck region.
Marma points are an important element of the Ayurveda’s healing power. Like acupressure
which is widely practised all over the globe as a treatment modality for pain relief in various
diseases, likewise if the marma points are anatomically understood and are differentiated
from the acupressure points then marma therapy can also be developed as a treatment
modality. Here we have compared the marma points and the exact acupoints and further
study has to be done by doing acupuncture on the marma points and observing its results.
