YOGA AS A PREVENTIVE INTERVENTION FOR ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE: A COMPREHENSIVE UPDATE OF THE LITERATURE

Abstract
The incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is rapidly increasing in
developed and developing countries due to modernization and ageing
population, this trend is expected to worsen in the coming decades.
The complex pathology of AD is not clearly understood, despite
scientific breakthroughs, strategies that effectively halt disease
progression are still lacking. AD prevention is becoming a global
health priority, epidemiological studies have revealed several risk
factors for developing AD, such as lifestyle related factors. primary
prevention by acting on modifiable risk factors, remain unexplored,
there is an urgent need to investigate the primary preventive
approaches. Yoga is one of the popular mind-body approaches
developed in India. Yoga is known to exert positive psychophysiological
changes, which have wide-ranging clinical implications.
Therefore, we propose Yoga based interventions for the primary
prevention of AD. As Yoga holds promise for the prevention and deceleration of AD and
other neurodegenerative disorders. Focused efforts are needed to address this public health
challenge.
