Abstract
This review projected to give updated information related to gastro retentive dosage forms (GRDFs). Research in the field of oral dosage forms (DFs) directed to improve their performance through combating its major drawback of short gastric residence time (GRT) and unpredictable gastric emptying time (GET) by retarding the GET and improving the GRT. Floating system, mucoadhesive system, magnetic system, expandable system, etc., based orally administered DFs extensively exploited for improving GRT and are collectively categorised as GRDFs. In the last two decades, numerous studies on GRDFs is going on but very few products merchandised. Product developmental research aimed to get a reproducible and high quality attributes (process) that will produce an optimised and validated product, and will ensure acceptable and reproducible product quality and performance throughout the shelf life of the product. Very few publications are available which can comply above shortcomings. Accordingly, latest relative information collected and presented. This review will help the researches to choose an appropriate methodology for designing efficient GRDFs with desired performance or product characteristics.
