Abstract
Background: Ayurveda follows a holistic approach for the healthy
and long life. The disturbances in sharira (body) and mana (mind)
doshas lead to the pathogenesis of a disease. So, Ayurveda gives prime
importance to positive mental health along with physical health.
Vishada is considered one of the Manasika Rogas and can be
correlated with Major Depressive Disorder. It's both a state of emotion
(Manasika Bhava) in addition to being a disease (Manasika Vyadhi).
This review aims to understand the condition of Vishada better and
incorporate Ayurveda principles for its management. Materials and
Methods: The data has been derived from various Ayurvedic classical
texts, authentic websites, and various research articles in different
journals from Pubmed, Medline, Google Scholar etc. Result: The
previous researches incorporated in the study showed positive and stained improvement in
the management of Depression through Ayurveda integrative protocol. This alleviated kapha,
Vata, and components of manodushti and increased sattwabala by restructuring and renetworking
mana via modification in chintya, vicharya, uhya, dheya, sankalpa and budhi
leading to changes in manasikabhava viz. bhakti, sheela, chesta and achara. This will help in
maintenance of mental well-being through balancing the internal milieu (sharrerika and
manasika dosha balance) and external milieu (prakriti and purushasamyabhava). Conclusion:
There is a broad scope of future studies to be conducted to revalidate the efficacy of ancient
Ayurvedic principles through various modern diagnostic techniques and develops new ayurvedic formulation and modified interventional procedures which are cost-effective and patient friendly.
Keywords: Vishada, Manasikavikara, Depression.
