Abstract
PCOS is a common chronic an ovulatory disorder with androgen
excess in women of reproductive age. In PCOS hormonal imbalance
give rise to the clinical manifestation i.e. Amenorrhea, hirsutism,
obesity, hair loss, painful menses, acne & Infertility. According to
Ayurveda, This type of clinical features are found in Pushpagni
jataharini (Disease similar to the PCOS mostly having
hyperandrogenism and an ovulatory cycle). It involves imbalance of
vata and kapha doshas, meda –mamsa-rakta dhatus & In Artava kshaya
the menstruation does not appear in its appropriate time or it is delayed
(intermenstrual period is prolonged). Aims: To explore and
understand, ayurvedic theories and practices on PCOS. Conclusion:
Comparing the PCOS condition with any one classical mentioned disease is difficult. No
direct correlating condition was found in classical text books. Hence samprapti of PCOS in
ayurvedic terms were postulated. In Ayurveda it is better understood based on the doshas and
dushyas involved rather than a mere term to represent it. Here an attempt has been made to
understand PCOS with Ayurvedic classics.
