Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a common complaint in day-to-day general
practice. The chronicity and uncontrolled high blood glucose lead to
vascular complications either microvascular or macrovascular
pathology such as neuropathy, retinopathy, nephropathy and other
cardiovascular disorders. Hence rigorous measures need to be taken to
control hyperglycemia. Since there is an increased curiosity towards
herbal medicine due to its less adverse effects, research needs to be
conducted on the antidiabetic efficacy of the existing plants. This
review is about the herbal ingredients of a polyherbal formulation,
“Thetran Vidhai Kudineer” presented in the classical textbook of Siddha Materia Medica
which is indicated for hyperglycemia. The herbal ingredients mentioned in the literature
are Cassia auriculata, Strychnos potatorum seeds, Terminalia chebula, Limonia acidissimia
resin. The search for the review was done on databases like Google scholar, Pubmed, and
Science Direct to retrieve the information on preclinical studies conducted on the herbal
ingredients of Thetran Vidhai kudineer. Overall 15 preclinical studies were reviewed, and the
results were presented. Also, the mechanism of action behind the antidiabetic activity of these
herbs were discussed. This review could bring new insights to approach the Siddha
formulation of medicine in a scientific way to prove its efficacy and pharmacological actions
of the natural plants.
