A REVIEW ON VYANGA W.S.R. TO MELASMA AND ITS AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT

Abstract
Vyanga or Melasma is a skin condition which comes under kshudra
roga as per ayurveda. In this condition hyper pigmented patches appear
on face. Generally these patches appear on face areas which are
exposed to direct sunlight such as cheeks, forehead, nose, upper and
lower lips. As per modern science it is believed that exposure to ultra
violet radiations from sunlight causes melasma. Ayurveda described
the term Vyanga for similar manifestation. It is characterized by the
presence of niruja (painless), tanu (thin) and shyava varna mandalas
(bluish black patches) on face which occurs due to vitiation of vata,
pitta dosha followed by rakta dushti. The treatment as per modern
science. has many side effects and the recurrence after the treatment is
very common. The treatment for Vyanga in Ayurveda is very effective,
with no recurrence and no side effects. As per Ayurveda drugs having
Kushthagna, Raktashodhaka, Twak Prasdaka and Varnyakara properties are helpful in the
management of Vyanga or Melasma. Ayurvedic texts such as Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga
Hridaya, Yoga Rantanakara, Chakradutta have mentioned the pathophysiology and treatment
of Vyanga. Present article is indepth review and compilation of various Ayurvedic texts and
modern literatures regarding panchanidana of Vyanga w.s.r. to Melasma and its Ayurvedic
management.
