Abstract
Education about the rules of behavior and dietary regime in patients
with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is still a fundamental
point of treatment that cannot be replaced by modern therapies. The
aim of our study is to prove the necessity and importance of reeducation
of patients with DM to optimize glycemic control, prevent
complications and achieve a better quality of life. For this purpose, a
five-day training course was conducted for patients with diabetes
mellitus (DM), hospitalized at the Clinic of Endocrinology and
Metabolic Diseases, Medical Medical Academy, Sofia, Bulgaria.
Metabolic control was assessed at baseline and at follow-up visits in
different time periods. The effect of training on glycated hemoglobin
(HbA1c), body weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), blood pressure
(BP) and lipid control was monitored. The results of the conducted follow-up demonstrated
the need for periodic repetition of the education of patients with DM and showed efficacy on
control, which was independent of treatment change. Based on the mentioned results, we
concluded that periodic repetition of training in DM patients for adherence to medication,
exercise and dietary regime is necessary.
