Abstract
A toxicity study is the investigation of either short or long-term toxic
effects of a drug or chemical on animals. Acute toxicity is the toxicity
produced by a pharmaceutical when it is administered in one or more
doses during a period not exceeding 24 hours. Repeated dose toxicity
studies focuses on adverse effects occurring after administration of a
single dose or multiple doses of a test sample per day during a period
from 14 to 28 days. Chronic toxicity is the ability of the substance or
mixture of substances to cause harmful effects over an extended
period, usually upon repeated and continuous exposure. Mutagenicity
study of gene mutation, which are the changes in DNA.
Carcinogenicity is the study of mechanism of induction of tumours. Teratogenicity study is to
investigate the potential of a test agent to cause foetal malformations, embryo-foetal death,
foetal weight reduction, or adverse effects on maternal health.
