LITERARY IMPORTANCE OF SUSHRUTA SAMHITA AND ITS UNIQUENESS

Abstract
Introduction-Ayurveda is a holistic tradition and way of living that
helps one to attain complete wellness. But what that complete wellness
means, is understood with the help of the three foundational treatises of
Ayurveda namely Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtang
Sangraha. Acharya Sushruta, the author of Sushruta Samhita is known
as the “Father of Surgery”. Sushruta Samhita is seen by many as a
textbook of topics relating to surgery only and it is a lesser-known fact
that Sushruta Samhita is a compilation of lessons related to basic
concepts of Ayurveda, theory of creation, anatomy, causes- pathologymanagement
of diseases, etc. Sushruta Samhita comprises of important
fundamental concepts like definitions of Tridosha, Trividha Roga,
Tantrayukti, Panchmahabhoota, Shadkriyakaala etc. Important
procedures of clinical importance like Ksharkarma, Agnikarma, Raktmokshana, etc are
explained in this Samhita. It encompasses light on various fields of specialization like
surgery, medicine, diseases of eye, ear, nose, throat, toxicology, embryology, psychiatry,
rejuvenation etc. Method- Study, collection of literary background of each sthana of
Sushruta Samhita relating to Ashtang Ayurveda. Result- Sushruta Samhita’s literature holds a
unique and great role in understanding the fields of Ashtang Ayurveda. Conclusion- Sushruta
Samhita is equally required for better understanding of diseases and their management.
