Abstract
Background: Rasa Shastra is a pharmaceutical branch of Indian
system of medicine which mainly deals with the metals, minerals,
animal origin product, toxic herbs and their use in therapeutics.
Bhasma are the potent Ayurvedic preparations prepared by metals and
minerals. These Bhasma possess wide range of therapeutic efficacy
and are considered superior because of their qualities like small dose,
quick action, palatability and longer shelf life. Yashada Bhasma is
important formulation mentioned in Rasa Shastra texts obtained from
the incineration of Raw Yashada. Aims and Objectives: To prepare
two types of Yashada Bhasma as mentioned in classical texts and to do
its analytical study. Materials and methods: The pharmaceutical
procedures adopted in this study are Yashada Shodhana (Rasa
Taringini), Jarana (Rasa Taringini), Marana as per Ayurveda Sara Sangraha. Then 2 types
of Yashada Bhasma was prepared as per Ayurvedic texts (Rasa Tarangini, RRS, Ayurveda
Sara Sangrah) and characterized by various modern analytical techniques. Organo leptic
characteristics, Physico-chemical analysis like Total ash, Acid insoluble ash, Water soluble
ash, Loss on drying at 105 c, Identification chemical, Assay of elements, Particle size
distribution were carried out. Discussion: Raw materials selected to prepare Yashada Bhasma were tested chemically for their purity and used. All the associated drugs like Kanji, Takra, etc. were used at various stages. After Yashada was subjected to an intermediate procedure called Jarana, where in the molten metal was roasted with Apamarga Panchanga churna. Chakrika is grey in colour but after successive Putas it becomes Pale Yellow of both types of Bhasama i.e. Type 1 & Type 2. Conclusion: The main objective of marana is the structural and chemical transformation of metal into metallic compounds(bhasma) which are bio absorbable. It is prime requisite to eliminate toxicity and minimise adverse effects of bhasma, the complete transformation of raw metal into bhasma form. The physico- chemical analysis reveals that Yashada Bhasma Type1 & Type 2 prepared by following classical guidelines are very effective. Well prepared Bhasma offer many advantages due to their long shelf life, lesser dose, easy storing facilities.
