A CASE CONTROL STUDY ON RISK FACTORS OF MADHUMEHA (TYPE-2 DIABETES MELLITUS) AT JAIPUR AND ITS PERIPHERY

Abstract
Background: Diabetes is fast gaining the status of a potential
epidemic in India with more than 65 million being affected by it. In
some extent, having similarities with etiological factors, the
Avaranajanya Madhumeha can be correlated with type 2 Diabetes
mellitus. In the description of Nidana of Madhumeha, Santarpana Hetu
is major cause but Apatarpana Hetu is also equally responsible for
pathogenesis of Madhumeha (Type 2 DM). Aim & objective: To
establish the association of certain Santarpana and Apatarpana Hetu
with Madhumeha and to evaluate its role in the pathogenesis of
Madhumeha (type 2 DM). Material & Methods: A Case-Control
study was carried out wherein total 600 individuals were interviewed on the basis of survey
proforma. Out of 600 individuals, 300 individuals with sign & symptoms of Madhumeha
(diabetic) were considered as cases while 300 healthy individuals were considered as controls
(non-diabetic). Results: Data was arranged in 2×2 contingency table and Fisher's Exact test
was applied. The result of survey of 300 cases (diabetic) & 300 controls (non-diabetics)
shows that Maida, White rice, Gramyaudakanupa Mamsa, Potato & its preparation Gorasa
(Dairy products) Gramya Ahara (Bakery items, Preserved food, Junk food), Divasvap,
Avyayam, Cinta are strongly associated with incidence of Madhumeha (type 2 diabetes)
