CONCEPTUAL STUDY OF NIDAN PANCHAK OF YUVAN PIDIKA WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO ACNE

Abstract

In today’s scenario, consciousness of people towards health and beauty is increasing day by day. Face which is considered as the most important organ reflecting beauty of a person is mostly affected by certain diseases in adolescents. One such disease described in Ayurveda is Yuvan Pidika. Acharya Sushruta has described this disease as Shalmali thorn like eruptions on face of young men and women. This disease is commonly seen at puberty in adolescence in both the sexes which in turn profoundly impacts the physical and psycho-social well being of a person. This disease has been mentioned under Kshudra Roga by many classics. Yuvan Pidika has been explained as caused by vitiation of Kapha, Vata and Rakta which leads to symptoms like pain, redness, itching and swelling. It is also known by terms as Mukhadushika, Tarunya Pidika. In modern science, Yuvan Pidika can be considered as Acne. Acne is chronic inflammatory condition of the pilosebaceous units characterised by the presence of comedones, papules, pustules, nodules, cysts and scars. In Ayurveda, Nidan Panchak which is one of the important method for diagnosis of disease is helpful in knowing the root cause of the disease and eliminating it. The five components of Nidan Panchak are Nidan, Purvaroop, Roop, Upshay and Samprapti. These five components can lead to better understanding of the disease and helps in it’s management.
