Abstract
Indigenous drugs possessing fewer side effects should be looked for as
a better alternative for the treatment of pain, inflammation, and pyrexia.
Herbal and mineral drugs or combination of the both are the beneficial
one in the treatment of various types of fever. This study aimed to
evaluvate the anti pyretic activity of the siddha herbomineral
formulation Oma chooranam which has the ingredients as follow,
Omam (Trachyspermum ammi), Yaanai thippili(Scindapsus officinalis),
Kadukkai thol (Pericarp of Terminalia chebula), Karkadaga singi
(Pistacia integerrima), Chukku (Dried rhizome of Zingiber officinale)
and Induppu (Sodium chloride impura). The purified raw drugs were
ground into powdered form. The biochemical analysis of Oma
chooranam revealed that it contains calcium, chloride, ferrous iron,
tannic acid, unsaturated compounds, reducing sugar and amino acids.
Six healthy adult albino rats of both sexes weighing 150-200 g, were divided into 3 groups (n
=3) of 2 rats each. Fever was induced by injecting 12% suspension of Brewer‟s yeast by
subcutaneous injection below the nape of the neck. The test drug (200mg/kg/bw), standard
paracetamol (1ml/kg/bw) and control saline vehicle were administered orally. In statistical
analysis, the values were subjected to one way analysis of variance(ANOVA). LD50 values of
Oma chooranam was 2000mg/kg/ bw and 1/10 th of ED50 as 200mg/kg/bw was selected for
screening of the antipyretic activity. The treatment with Oma chooranam at a dose of
200mg/kg/bw significantly(p
