ROLE OF MODERN DIAGNOSTIC TREATMENT IN AYURVEDIC PRACTICES WITH SPECIAL REFRENCE TO DIABETIC RETINOPATHY (PRAMEHAJANYA DHATUGATA KSHAYA): REVIEW ARTICLE

. Abstract In Ayurveda Madhumeha is a type of Prameha. Ancient Acharya categorically classify 20 varieties of Meha under Vata, Pitta, Kapha doshas. As such there is no clear description available on Diabetic Retinopathy in ancient text. So In Ayurveda it can be correlated with Madhumeha updrav (Netragata Pramehajanya Dhatugata Kshaya). In modern Diabetes mellitus is one of the most prevalent and faster-growing metabolic disorders especially in India. It has become a non-communicable epidemic disease. It is a multifactorial devastating disorder develops due to abnormal glucose metabolism and other metabolic derangements which have serious pathologic effect on all the systems of the body including eye. The patients with diabetic retinopathy are 25 times more prone to blind than non-diabetic. Studies suggest that at least 30% people of diabetic patients have diabetic retinopathy. Therefore there is a need of routine retinal screening of patients with diabetes to recognize and to prevent progress in early stages. Symptoms of Pramehajanya Dhatugata Kshaya can probably correlate with symptoms of diabetic retinopathy. In Ayrvedic practices while treating Prameha, the modern diagnostic techniques are scientifically useful like - fundus photo, FFA, OCT to find the disease and also to know the progress of treatment.
